I.

THE TURTLE KEY

A close-up of an Eastern Box Turtle Hibernating In Winter, Pen and Ink over watercolor on paper by Benrali

1.

His dreams are beyond human history.

He went beyond time, on a dream journey.

All winter he dreamed within the garden,

with grains of sand; stars in the galaxy.

His shell rests in roots like a sacred stone,

like a stone with letters of mystery.

2.

All winter he spoke with stones under snow.

Each stone has a name, known to Earth only.

But Spring has come and hyacinth roots grow.

Spring has the keys to set Jupiter free.

Spring unlocks Earth, the pebbles start to speak.

The hearts of stones beat when Spring sets them free.

3.

Then a parrot's beak breaks through the garden.

Like a bear he slept through winter safely.

But Spring came early, the climate has changed.

The Earth turtles knew is a memory.

4.

Then Jupiter smells the Spring hyacinth.

As he walks over cold moss, he feels free.

His ancient shell has the colors of Fall,

On his shell, drops from the Sun burn brightly.

His shell is a tapestry nature wove,

a garden of flowers blooming brightly.

One night I dreamed about Jupiter's shell,

embedded was a gold skeleton key.

5.

His designs are gold letters from the Sun,

maybe a language God knows secretly.

I imagine his designs are poems,

read by angels from heaven secretly.

Jupiter has thirteen plates on his shell.

Thirteen is the number of mystery.

Outliving dinosaurs and great empires;

thirteen for the tortoise has been lucky.

6.

Gaze at the patterns on box turtle shells,

a song only angels know secretly.

Gaze at all the patterns in your garden;

starry moss, mushrooms and wings of ivy.

All artists see this world quite differently.

When looking at nature what do I see?

I ponder that each garden is a song,

maybe a song only Allah knows secretly.

7.

Calm like a deer he drinks his pond water,

I gain peace, watching him drink quietly.

I am a patient man when drawing him;

each dot, line and circle I draw gently.

My sketch tries to capture Jupiter's grace.

Reptiles are part of Earth's timeless journey.

8.

Once I like the Indian-ink drawing,

from the rainbow I add colors slowly.

His colors are like rare slipper-orchids,

colors like coral reef fish from the sea,

bright colors from ancestors who are gone;

bright colors from Earth's stone-age memory.

9.

With cross-hatch, stipple, light and dark I build.

Slowly, with dots I give weight to ivy.

I love Indian-ink on rice paper,

like maps from another time and country.

Sometimes I pretend Im an explorer,

from a ship in the sixteenth century.

I draw animals and plants that I see,

I draw details of this unknown country.

Green Mountains And White Rivers

Beautiful Detail of A Cross-hatching drawing of ivy leaves by Benrali

10.

I found deep peace in drawing simple leaves,

while drawing I made this discovery.

I found green mountains cut by white rivers.

I found peace in drawing white veins of ivy.

Since the tortoise is a living fossil,

I wonder in day-dreams what worlds they see?

11.

To the worlds beyond great dinosaurs they go,

under the ivy's emerald canopy.

Through a doorway of time in the ivy,

I imagine he dreams through history.

He dreams away to songs of cicada,

stone-age songs about the Earth's long journey.

I imagine he's an angel of time,

a guardian of Earth's sanctuary.

12.

Since turtles were here for millions of years,

his dreams are a perhistoric journey.

I use my power of fantasy.

I wonder what worlds Jupiter can see?

13.

I imagine the Iroquois legend;

on a turtle's back, Earth rose from the sea,

a pure Earth, untouched by any human,

a clean earth beyond human memory.

14.

Think of dinosaurs his ancestors knew,

tortoises were here before their story.

Think of the timeless moon, it has not changed.

Under moonlight what ghosts can turtles see?

Humorous drawing of what if turtles evolved to birds, painted and drawn by Benrali

15.

I know tortoises are not dinosaurs.

I remember the evolution theory,

but once I had a thought that was funny;

what if turtles became birds, how crazy!?

What if turtles were like dinosaurs?

What if they evolved, flying tree to tree?

Would they be mammoth sized like the dragon?

Would they be flightless birds like the kiwi?

A Drawing Of Strawberries by Benrali

16.

I imagine a place Jupiter loves;

gardens where he can eat a strawberry,

His ancestors must know this ancient fruit.

How long has Earth known the wild strawberry?

17.

The world of dreams are not fully explored

but I have a thought on the Sun's key.

In each mind dwells a garden without end,

a limitless garden called fantasy,

a garden where we pray and build silently.

What if we built strong thoughts in unity?

Imagine millions of minds healing Earth;

finding cures by thinking in unity.

Imagine healing future generations,

from fossil fuel to solar energy.

A beautiful pen and ink drawing over watercolor of an Eastern Box turtle morphing into a monarch butterfly by Benrali

Imagine healing future generations,

a utopia for those we wont see.

Turtles, gold keys, saving humanity?

Its time for a new journey for Benrali!
